Birdie

Scoring

A score of one stroke under par on a hole. For example, scoring 3 on a par-4 hole.

Explained Simply

The name "birdie" originated in the early 1900s in the United States, when "bird" was slang for something excellent. Making a birdie is one of the most satisfying feelings in golf — it means you played a hole better than its design intended.

Example

""I hit my approach shot to 3 feet and made birdie on the 7th hole.""
